Learn about the difference between Dish and Menu Items. And how you can override Dish's default settings applied to the menu items.

1. Be on Control Panel,

Edit settings for Dish and Menu items

You can choose any item of a menu category in a menu, for example, let's go with the BBQ Chicken Pizza item in the Specials category of the Wednesday Special menu (that we created in the article - 2. Adding a Specials Menu).


1. Go to Wednesday Special,

2. Select Specials,

3. Click on the BBQ Chicken Pizza item


4. Go to Edit

After clicking Edit BBQ Chicken Pizza, have a look at the BBQ Chicken Pizza details (properties window for the dish) that appears on the right side of your computer screen.


What is a Dish?

  • A dish is anything that you serve from your kitchen.
  • It's your main items, toppings, etc. that come with your Regular menu.
  • A dish itself doesn't have a price.
  • It has Name, Description, Select picture, and Dietary preferences options.
  • A dish can be searched using the Manage Dishes section as shown below:

  • Name, description, and picture set in dish settings are the default settings in all types of menus.



How do the settings render on the Order online menu?


1. Go to Order online menu,

2. Go to WEDNESDAY SPECIAL,

3. Under the Specials category, see BBQ Chicken Pizza item

After clicking on Edit BBQ Chicken Pizza details, have a look at the Add/Edit Item (properties window for the item) that appears on the right side of the screen.


What is a Menu item?

  • Menu items are specific items that are linked to a single dish.
  • It could be any particular item that you serve on your specials menu.
  • You can create a number of items with different combinations of items of the same dish.
  • A menu item is linked to a dish and attached to a price.
  • The system lets you override the dish name and description, otherwise, the menu item will take the default name and description of the dish.


How to override name or description?

You can give your items different names and descriptions by editing them in the Add/Edit Item (properties window for the item).

1. Let's add a description - Available in small size only,


2. Save it



How do the overridden settings render in the Order online menu?


1. Go to the Order online menu,

2. Go to WEDNESDAY SPECIAL,

3. Under the Specials category, see the description for  BBQ Chicken Pizza
